A simple view on SEO Code of Ethics
Dynamic technological advancements has opened up a lot of doors and recognized the value of creative concepts for web based businesses yet the cut-throat competition for better rankings on major search engines on the internet, especially for traffic dependent commercial websites, has caused a lot of dispute and brought issues of SEO bad practices to the limelight.
SEO or Search Engine Optimization as defined in wikipedia means the process of improving ranking in search engine results. Considering the number of new websites that are being launched instantaneously and the volume of internet users or consumers that are being targeted by these sites, it is important to have a set of guidelines to regulate competition and level the playing field.
This is where the SEO code of ethics comes to play, ideally, a website should be gauged by the following features:
• Relevance of content: is it clear, useful, informative and factual? Content is the foundation of your site and offering updated quality information is your platform to gaining more audience. Respect copyrights and intellectual property, do not plagiarize. Make sure to give credit where credit is due.
• Aesthetics or presentation: It is not merely icing on the cake. Design your site from the end-user’s viewpoint and make sure that it is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Provide a page for user comments and feedback, being proactive is a win-win situation because it shows that you are striving to ensure customer satisfaction and continuous improvement.
• Technical angle: Be search engine smart but play it right. Use targeted keywords to make your site more accessible rather than using dirty tricks like spamming techniques. If you have to resort to doing this then you have to seriously rethink your tactics; in the long run, it hurts more than it helps and you are going to pay dearly for your mistakes. The worst-case scenario would be getting your site banned.
• Marketing edge: Visibility is the key but it’s not just about the numbers game. Be persistent in link building to help drive traffic to your web site but exercise good judgment. Link to sites that are relevant and complementary to your own.
The wealth of information on the web has empowered consumers to make informed choices. At the end of the day, if what you have to offer is of real value and you play fair by exercising best practices all your efforts will pay off.
There is no surefire way that can guarantee success and it doesn’t happen overnight; yet nothing can replace thorough research and keeping an open strategy. Knowing your niche, keeping realistic goals, being adequately informed and exercising professional responsibility go hand in hand with success.
